Motivating Leaders In A Diverse World - Empowering People To Be Leaders

Trusting Others

Maybe it was where I grew up, maybe it was caused by incidents that occurred as a teen, but I had trust issues for a long time. I didn’t trust anyone and I especially didn’t trust myself.

My trust issues resulted in some very painful experiences and caused some uncomfortable moments as I gained more and more responsibility. As I’ve worked with individuals, teams and groups, I’ve learned how critical trust is.

Trust also plays a critical role in comedy, the audience trusts you to get to the edge…without going over. When a comic goes over, he or she is no longer funny.

In a team setting the results are similar. A team member can only go so far before he loses the trust and confidence of other team members. However, as a leader, trust plays an even more significant role. At the leadership level your actions, words and follow through are continually on view. How you act in your office, walking to your car and your actions in the community are always being evaluated. Are you being who you say you are?

It begins with you, do you trust yourself? I know it took a while for me to reach that state. I trusted that I would show up when I said I would, that I would follow through as I promised. I believed myself…not just believed in myself but believed myself, it made me felt powerful, strong and confident.

I admit that I would exaggerate when I was younger. I tended to make the story bigger and bigger. I wanted to feel important, because I didn’t feel important or valued. So I would paint a bigger and bigger picture that even I didn’t believe. The whole process backfired. It didn’t work; I didn’t feel important or valued. Honestly, it made me feel worse, a lot worse. It wasn’t until I began to live my life with truth that I began to trust myself. I began to uncover who I really was. I began to share my story and live my life.

I started with little things, for instance, saying I would show up and then following through. Stopping myself in the middle of a fabricated story and saying, “that’s not true, the truth is…” I had to finally face and tell my truth. Sometimes this made people uncomfortable, sometimes it made people angry, however, most of the time I found people drawn to me. I found they wanted to be with me.

I found my staff followed me and were inspired by me. I found that my marriage became stronger and my relationships improved. The more I trusted myself and my truth, the more I became trustworthy, and the more trusting I became.

I trust my staff, they do the best they can for me and I trust my colleagues. There are times when I find myself feeling untrustworthy of someone. I trust my instincts; however, I also need to determine if this is an old behavior of mine or am I really sensing a potential problem.

Life is better with trust. I’m happier. How about you? Are you trustworthy?

Quotes of the Month:

From http://www.wisdomquotes.com

Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him, and to let him know that you trust him.
~Booker T. Washington

A man who doesn't trust himself can never really trust anyone else.
~Cardinal De Retz

You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you don't trust enough.
~Frank Crane

We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.
~John F. Kennedy

The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team." They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.
~Peter Drucker

Try-its:

Just for today
  • Arrive five minutes early
  • Stop yourself when you find yourself embellishing the truth
  • Thank your partner for keeping you straight. You know, the person that catches you when you try to sprinkle some spice into your stories. In my life that is David, thank you David
  • Be there as promised, no matter what
  • If you can’t follow through on a commitment, call, apologize and let the person know the truth
  • Be gentle with yourself. This is a process. You won’t change everything in one day, but you will change
**********

Kick-butt actions:

If someone is lying to you or is untrustworthy:
  1. Tell them. Not sharing the truth with them means you are hiding what you know to be true.
  2. Three strikes your out. There is a reason for this statement. At first you don’t know that they are lying, the second time you may think that they are lying, the third time you KNOW that they are lying. Remember; be careful who you hang out with because liars create liars.
  3. Look at yourself. Have you lied to them or behaved in an untrustworthy way? If you are not sure, ask. Often times, someone behaves in an untrustworthy way because they were treated that way. Life often mirrors what we are thinking or doing. Remember you reap what you sow. Evaluate yourself to learn what part you played in this untrustworthy relationship.

Have You?
  • Told the truth today?
  • Owned up to a 'white' lie?
  • Paid for the item that the cashier forgot to charge you for?
  • Stopped yourself as you were going to fib to your kids today?
  • Sent kisses to your hubby, kids, wife, mom, dad or grandparents?

Soldiers and sailors from the US Army, The Army National Guard and US Navy read the book, they like the easy to carry small size and the BIG message.
