Do You Present Yourself Well?
During a recent trip I stayed over a friend's house. She is a powerhouse in her industry and gives back to her industry by teaching a
certification course at NYU. The semester is over, and while I'm visiting she is grading her students' (other industry professionals) final reports.
She showed me their work. All the work was satisfactory, however, some were extraordinary, some were just okay, and others were not prepared with pride. We discussed the students work and the impression made by the presentations in relation to what she really knew of the students. Some of the students whose work was mediocre were really talented, however you couldn't tell by their presentation. Maybe they were busy, or had family problems and couldn't give their all. That is a shame because now their work is communicating their abilities and it will take time to change people's perception of them. Presentation counts. Over the years I've learned how important it is to pay attention to your presentation. I'm still learning.
Though I am not a decorator, fashion plate or designer, I have learned that as I've grown and changed that my presentation, my language and my image must also change; this has caused discomfort. I didn't want to play the game - but in order to be who I wanted to
be I had to give up my rebellion. I've learned how to create the image, be the image and promote the image I want my company and myself to portray in order to live the life of my dreams.
There are five areas that you, as a professional, should be assessing every six months:- Your image (clothing, makeup and grooming)
- Your work area
- Your presentation abilities (the way you present, the quality of the reports you deliver,
including your charts, graphs and pictures)
- Your speech and writing skills
- Your attitude
The impression you create determines:- How people will respond to you
- How much money you will be paid
- What opportunities will be offered to you
There are two types of impressions:- First impressions are based on what others expect who you will be. This is determined by what people have shared about you, the purpose of the meeting and your image (including your behavior - which is a reflection of your attitude and confidence)
- Long term impressions are based on what you do, how you do it and your confidence regarding your dreams for your life and career
According to Malcolm Gladwell's research, in his book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, when we, "meet a new person or have to make sense of something quickly or encounter a novel situation." He says, "Snap judgments are, first of all, enormously quick: they rely on the thinnest slices of experience … they are also unconscious." "We thin-slice because we have to, and we come to rely on that ability, because there are lots of hidden fists out there, lots of situations where careful attention to the details of a very thin slice, even for no more than a second or two, can tell us an awful lot."
A few years ago, experts thought we had at least two minutes to make an impression, now we know we have less than a second or two.
What people think of us is determined by what we think of ourselves. We dress, stand, speak and shake hands based on what we think of ourselves, and our thoughts are translated into our actions.
We attract people into our lives, relationships and experiences based on what we are thinking. When our thoughts change our exterior changes. Our mothers told us "Be careful who you hang out with". They warned us because who we hung out with determines how people think of us, how we dress, and how we speak. Jack Canfield shares in many of his books; if you want to be a millionaire hang out with millionaires.
So how do you want people to see you? How do you see yourself? Is there a communication problem between what you say and what you do? If you are dreaming of being in the fashion industry and wear dirty jeans and a stretched t-shirt, you are having a communication problem, you are communicating the wrong message.
If you are in the financial services industry do you look financially stable and secure? Are your cuffs frayed? Is your suit ill fitting? Or do you look like a winner who takes care of himself AND his money?
If you are seeking to be a manager do you dress like a manager/leader in your organization?
I'm in the process of buying a gently used luxury car. My husband found the car we wanted and went to the dealership to see if it fit our specifications; it did, and since I was in the office the salesperson agreed to drive the car over for me to see it and take a test drive. I met him outside and was immediately impressed with the sales person. He had a beautiful fitting, crisp white shirt that was impeccable. His wool pants were fitted and were cuffed. His shoes were shined. He had two rings on his hands that were subtle but noticeable. His hair was neat. He was a reflection of the company. I immediately
knew that he understood the car, the company and why I wanted this particular car. He had the image.
Can people say that about you? I've had to hire a stylist for advice on my wardrobe, and go to make-up artists for lessons. I'm signing up for etiquette lessons so that I'm comfortable with the dinners I go to and with the people I am dining with. I want to make sure that my first impressions coincide with my ideal image of myself.
How about you?

Quotes of the Month:
"Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image"
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"Image creates desire. You will what you imagine."
~J. G. Gallimore
"Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means."
~Albert Einstein
"Never hire anyone who is going to report directly to you who you do not intuitively just plain like from first impressions. If your instincts tell you you're going to have a hard time working with someone, pass."
~Fred Charette

Try-its:
Changing your ways is challenging and can be quite difficult, especially when we think we are losing 'our selves'. Rebellion can be a behavior that is a defense mechanism. "I don't want to change, that would be selling out" or "I can't afford the kinds of clothing that I need"
One of the best things I ever did was have stylist, Gari Collins, look through my closet and gently tell me I had a problem. I felt so relieved having help with my dress, evidently I was a disaster. I told her I don't like to shop. I told her limit was 2 hours of shopping and that the last 15 minutes I would be cranky and not a happy camper. I warned her.
She went pre-shopping going to stores and selecting items for me to try on. The stores held them for her and I came by the next day and was whisked through mountains of clothing. I learned a lot. I also saw how I've embraced styles that were SO wrong for me.
A year later I am much improved. However, I am going back to some of my own ways. I guess it is time to call Gari again. No one says that change was easy! Here are try-its for you.
Your image (clothing, makeup, tie and grooming)- Watch some of those makeover shows. You will get an idea of what you can wear and what you can't.
- For women I suggest purchasing Trinny Woodall's and Susannah Constantine's books "What Not to Wear",
"What You Wear Can Change Your Life", "What Your Clothes Say About You" and their latest,
"The Survival Guide" or go to their website at http://www.trinnyandsusannah.com
- For men go to
http://mensfashion.about.com/od/wardrobebasics/a/over40advice.htm
read as much as you can about men's fashion so you can learn.
- Consider hiring an image consultant. They are less expensive than you imagine and are WELL WORTH
the cost. To find a certified image consultant go to
http://www.aici.org
- Buy fashion and style magazines, look at the styles and adapt them for you. Make sure they
are for appropriate for your age.
Your work area:- Take 30 minutes to clear your desk and file. Set a timer
- Ask someone to look at your area and tell you what they really think. What would they think
of a person with this work area? If you aren't' happy with what their perception, change your mode
and clean up your act.
Your presentation abilities (the way you present, the quality of the reports you deliver including your charts, graphs and pictures)- Have a presentation party. Ask a group of select friends to bring samples of reports, charts, graphs that they have prepared. Share what you like, the techniques they used and share how they
should improve them. Utilize what you learn.
- Take your report to Kinkos. Ask them for advice to make the report powerful. Sometimes it is only a simple tweaking that takes a report from ho hum to WOW!!
Your speech and writing skills- Join Toastmasters to improve your presentation skills
- Write in a journal every day
- Write an essay about anything and ask someone to edit the essay for you. You learn so much from having someone edit your work
Your attitude**********
Kick-butt actions:- Toss out the old, frayed, and stretched clothing. You deserve good quality. You deserve luxury (without going into debt).
- Go to a high end store and feel the fabric, look at how the seams were sewn and look at the details. The quality is in the details. Know that is where you want to be.
- Get comfortable shoes. High heels need not hurt and you can find styles that look good and feel good.
- Get a massage. My sister-in-law and I give each other 1 hour foot massages (HEAVEN!!!!) we sit on a couch, bring the lotion and chat while we groan and moan in pleasure (our husbands think we are nuts!).
- SMILE!! There is nothing more powerful than a smile. There is nothing more confident than a smile. SMILE broadly, smile with energy and smile with confidence.
**********
Have You?- Taken care of a friend in need lately. Not with money, but with your time, words of encouragement and with your love.
- Told your significant other how happy you are with them?
- Really appreciated your life? Where you live, what you have and who is in your life?
- Written yourself a love letter? Have you told yourself how phenomenal, fantastic, awesome, brilliant, inspiring and powerful you are? If not, do it now.
