Mentoring And The Missing Link

Yesterday I received a call from someone asking me to refer them to an opportunity they were seeking. This is someone I don’t know nor do I have an experience of or with them. Therefore I can’t refer them. The experience was an important one for me and hopefully this newsletter will be helpful to you about mentoring and the missing link.

The person did have courage and confidence to ask. That was a good thing. However the missing link was that I had no relationship with the person at all.

The experience made me aware of the missing link in mentoring relationships. Success requires knowing and meeting the right people who can open doors for you. However, many mentoring relationships and organized mentoring programs leave out this most powerful component, introductions and connecting protégés to the mentor’s network.

How can you become a powerfully connected individual if you aren’t introduced to powerfully connected people?

Too often, mentoring only focuses on guiding, supporting and advising, all of which are valuable. However, a key role of mentors is to be able to confidently introduce the protégé to the mentor’s circle of influence.

This newsletter will address how to be sponsored or introduced to your mentors network

The mentoring relationship is a curious one. Often times the mentor is put into the position of being all knowing. Protégé’s believe that the mentor will automatically refer the protégé to the mentor’s network when the time is right. This is not the case.

Learn their criteria

Often the mentor doesn’t even think of introducing their protégé to their network. Unless the protégé (you) asks questions you will not know what needs to occur for your mentor to introduce you.

Some of those questions include:

  • What criteria do you look for before you refer someone?
  • Can you tell me an experience where a referral you made to someone didn’t work out? What did you learn?
  • Why do you refer people? How important is your referral to others? Why?
  • What have you learned about the referral process?
  • What needs to occur for you to refer me?
These questions provide a wealth of information for you. It will tell you what your mentor values, things to watch out for and how meaningful the referral process is to him or her.

Be referable

There is a lot of information about self esteem and misguided self esteem. Are you as good as you think you are? How do you know? It is really important to know your skills, knowledge and how you present yourself. Ask your peers, your intimate relationships, your boss and your HR manager. Do you look the part? Go to a menswear store and ask them to help you (if you are a male). Go to an image consultant if you are a female. Do you look the way you want or the way the next level looks?

How about your language? How are your manners? Do they need improvement? Are you cocky and overly confident? Know what you are projecting. Learn how you are perceived.

Do you follow through? Have you asked for feedback from your mentor?

Do you know your next move? Where do you want to go? It is hard to refer you if your mentor doesn’t know what you want. The ball is in your court.

Ask

Sometimes you have to have the courage to ask. This requires you to have the confidence, know what you want and then ask for the introductions. I just had to ask a very important person, who knows my work well, for an introduction to another VIP, it took courage. Looking back, I’m so excited because I did it. I know I that I am referable, I know that this person believes in me and I know what I wanted. It is easy for mentors to refer you when you are clear.

Read on, learn how to become referable, how to ask for what you want.

Try-its:

Who can you refer?

Remember the saying it takes one to know one. Have you referred any of your protégés lately?

If not, why not? Share with them what needs to happen for you to refer them. Talk to them about their goals and their dreams. Then look for opportunities for them. Do for them what you want done for yourself.

Once you do that, ask your mentor for the same help.

**********

Kick-butt actions:

Identify two people in your mentor’s network that you want to meet. Make a plan, ask yourself:
  • Why do I want to meet them?
  • How can I serve them?
  • What opportunities can we create by knowing each other?
  • When you have the plan done share your ideas with your mentor. This will encourage them to refer you.
People love to take credit for finding the next ‘it’ person. Give credit. You may be a twenty year overnight sensation, give credit to each person who referred you. Make them a hero....they made you a hero, too.

  • Asked someone for an introduction?
  • Caught snow in your mouth?
  • Had a party with different kinds of people?

Who is Pegine?

Former Bronx girl gang member, Pegine (Pe-geen), joined a new "gang", after being inducted into the Motivational Speakers Hall of Fame, its first Latina. Pegine's fellow 58, "gang members" include such luminaries as Dale Carnegie, Zig Ziglar and Tony Robbins. She has touched thousands of lives on motivating leaders in a diverse world and empowering people to be leaders with laughter and gusto! She is described as "audacious, bold, brilliant, clever, comical, dynamic, effective, enthusiastic, fresh, humorous, knowledgeable, perceptive, relevant, talented, vivacious, vivid, and witty!”

During her teenage years, Pegine’s leadership training began when she ran with the wrong crowd on the tough streets of the Bronx becoming a member of a girl gang. Within the gang culture, Pegine relied on a sharp wit and dynamic personality for "street credit". But even her charm could not keep Pegine out of trouble.
Pegine decided enough was enough and became a leader in her own life. She moved to Europe where she turned her life around. She launched two businesses both which she sold at a profit when she returned to the states to finish her BA. She worked her way up from receptionist to President of a Catalogue company with a 350 person sales force.

Pegine earned a Masters in Social Work, in group and organizational development, focusing on how organizations empower people to be leaders and how people can be leaders their own lives. To relieve stress - Pegine performs stand up comedy about life, leadership, business and family.

Her successes led to frequent appearances on national talk shows like Montel Williams, and Queen Latifah. One appearance led Montel Williams to win an Emmy! Business and news shows seek her insights including all the networks and CNN, MSNBC and NPR. Interviews include The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Chicago Sun Times, Fortune, BusinessWeek and various consumer magazines.

Pegine is the author of Sometimes You Need to Kick Your Own Butt; For All of Our Daughters, a leadership guide on how to mentor young women and girls; Bragging Rights: Leading in A Diverse World and White Men Are Diverse Too!
