Motivating Leaders In A Diverse World - Empowering People To Be Leaders

Navigate Your Ship with Gusto!

When you are on a boat headed to a destination, it is never a straight, direct line. Things happen, winds shift, water flows change, sometimes rough weather pushes you off course. Sailors know that they must course correct. Turning this way or that, because if they go off even a few degrees they can find themselves in a totally different place then they planned.

They stay focused on their destination.

A friend and author, Jerry Mundis (http://www.unblock.org), shares that when he paddles his kayak he sometimes gets caught in turbulent water. The water can drive his kayak towards treacherous rocks. He learned that if he shifts his vision to where he wants to go (open water) the kayak heads in that direction. If he focuses on the rocks he slams into the rocks.

After 9/11 I was headed towards the rocks. I focused on the pain and suffering, I focused on the loss of business (all my speaking engagements were canceled). I focused on what wasn’t working. I focused on the negative news and the more I focused on what wasn’t working, the more my world became a drama filled with challenges.

Then I stopped; I corrected my ship's course towards my desired destination; the life, the success and the kinds of people I wanted to surround myself with.

I had to ask myself, what was I was focusing on, the problem or the solution? I was definitely focusing on the problem. Whoa is me, boo hoo and all that drama. I had to do the opposite, find the laughter, the fun, the comedy. That is when I headed to the local comedy club and became a stand up comic, about life, business and relationships.

I started listening, watching and learning about comedy.

I sought new friends and associates who were living the way I wanted to live and who were enjoying the process. I surrounded myself with successful women who were millionaires. I surrounded myself with really happy funny people. I also stepped away from people who didn’t support my new vision of me and the life I wanted to have. Whiners, negative personalities, chaotic lives need not apply.

I asked myself, what didn’t I know that I needed to learn. I realized that I really needed to learn about managing, investing and saving money. I needed to learn about budgets and running a large company...my company. I could run other people’s businesses and sell their products and services, but I needed to move into a place to be able to sell and manage my own business successfully.

I took classes, sought mentors and asked for help. Miracle of miracles...I learned, I changed and I evolved.

I know people who are glued to TV's and newspapers reading about all the terrible things happening in the world. We do have other alternative sources of news such as http://www.happynews.com. There are lots of good, prosperous things happening in the US and internationally, you just need to focus on them.

Focus on what is good in your life right now. There is always an abundance of good and prosperous things in everyone’s life. If you are reading this then you have:

  • A computer
  • Electricity
  • Food
  • A place to sit comfortably to read
  • Hope, dreams and desires
  • Eyes to read or ears to hear, or some technology that allows you to take advantage of receiving this message
The fact of the matter is that in this time right now you have access to information, processes and people who can take you to the next level...if you choose to course correct and focus on the open water and your dreams.

You always have a choice. You can choose to look at what is not working or you can choose to focus on what is working. You can choose to celebrate the daily course corrections you are taking or bury yourself under the covers and hide. It is your choice.

Isn’t that cool? I love that. We can choose what we think about, what we focus on, what we want to have in our life and who we have in our life. We can celebrate and we can change.

That is a miracle!

Your staff has the same choices. Sometimes as a leader we have to be the guide. Have your team write what they are grateful for and appreciate before you begin your next staff meeting. They don’t have to share...although if you share first they will follow.

Write why you appreciate your team, write what you appreciate about your company, write what you appreciate in your life.

They may groan and moan ... take a tour of your building with your team. Give each member a clip board and have them jot down everything that is working and right in the office. Too often teams and employees take their surroundings and the people around them for granted, they assume that it is always like this everywhere. It isn’t. Encourage employees by engaging them in their surroundings and where they work. Connections are critical to feeling good about where you work, who you work for and what you do on a daily basis. You can help people do that by guiding what they choose to focus on.

This newsletter is about you. You the incredible person you are, you the leader, you reaching your potential.

Try-its:

Freaking out?

When the rocks seem to be heading directly towards you, don’t move. See everything slowly. Really observe what is happening. Stop the drama and do the following:
  1. Close your eyes
  2. Breathe
  3. Ask yourself the following questions:
    • Is your life in immediate danger?
    • Are you loved ones in immediate danger? Like this very instant?
    • If you said yes to any of these questions then ... ask yourself ...”Why are you reading this?
  4. Make believe that you are a character in the Matrix or one of those action films that slows everything down to super slow motion
  5. Take the time to know that all is well
  6. Focus on what is working right. Force yourself to go through your gratitude check list
    • Got food
    • Got shelter
    • Got clothing
    • Really think about everything that you have
  7. Focus on where you want to go. If you don’t know, think about that and choose something. Not choosing is choosing to stay where you are.

Kick-butt actions:

Years and years ago when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life I took a sheet a paper, folded it in thirds and wrote BE in the first column, HAVE in the second column and DO in the third.

I wrote in bullet point style what I wanted to be when I grew up. I started each sentence with I want to be, and filled in the blank.

Then I asked myself...”If I were who I wanted to be then what would I have?”
And I answered the question, over and over in bullet point style.

Finally I asked myself “If I did want to be and have what I wrote what would I need to do?”

For years I just followed the list. On October 15,2002 I was able to cross off everything. I had become what I said I wanted to be, I had what I said I wanted and I did it by following the plan.

Of course now I have a new Be Do Have written in October 2002. It is exciting because I know it worked before, it will work again.

Kick your own butt ... write your Be, Do, Have.

Have You Ever?
  • Written love notes and sent them to yourself?
  • Played in the rain after you turned 25?
  • Given a flower or a token of appreciation to a clerk, customer service rep or flight attendant?
