Here are some tips to make the delay of gratification more palatable.
1) Keep a visual description of your long range goal in front of you. When you are making your choice say to yourself “The ultimate pleasure is when I reach my goal”
2) Write down how you will feel when you reach your ultimate goal. What will you say when you receive the accolades, how will you stand and speak when you reach your goal. Read them out loud before and after you make your decisions.
3) Call someone who is supportive of your determination to achieve your goal.

Kick-butt actions:

How to say no!

As teenagers you were always drilled to stay away from bad influences. To say no to people who wanted you to use drugs, smoke or engage in activities that weren’t in your best interests. You were bombarded by TV commercials telling you to say no.

As adults you are left to your own devices. There is no one telling you how to stay on your path and give up pleasures that might stall you on your quest for success and achievement. Your parents may even tell you to slow down, take it easy, or question why you’re working so hard. You may have friends who want you to take a day off to play. You may be caught up in the doldrums and question yourselves. You know you have a dream, you have goals but gosh it’s so hard sometimes.

Please don’t get me wrong I am all for relaxing and reviving your self. I’m the first to say keep balanced and make sure that your priorities are straight – especially regarding your immediate families. What I’m talking about is the long term goals and dreams that you have for yourself. I’m here to encourage you to not give up in spite of obstacles and immediate pleasures.

If you are working on a college degree and working full time don’t give up! It took me eight years to get my degree. The years are going to come and go anyway – so if you want your degree (whether it is a bachelors, masters or PhD) go for it. Time will pass anyway.

Perhaps you’re in management and have planned where you want to go next. Take the necessary steps and actions you know you must do to get there. The time you invest will add to your education and opportunities for promotion. Co-workers may say “Why bother? Look at what’s happening around you! What’s the point?” The point is YOU will be ready to move, you will be experienced and skilled and you will be prepared. You will stand out because you chose not to accept immediate gratification but long term satisfaction.

Maybe you’re in business for yourself. You’re getting frustrated because wealth and the success aren’t coming as quickly as you would like. You’re looking at cash flow issues, employee concerns and business opportunities. Recent reports show that two thirds of new businesses will make it past the 2 year mark and 60% of those make it to the six year mark. Building a strong business foundation takes time. It takes daily tasks and takes delaying gratification. Don’t get frustrated – get excited about each day that you are in business and focus each day on working on your business.

In truth you only have today. Just today. Yesterday is gone and finished. Tomorrow isn’t here yet. You know where you want to be. So for today and only for today focus on what step you can do today to get one step closer to your dream. Immediate pleasures are only that - immediate pleasures – then they are over and you have nothing. Long term satisfaction remains forever allowing you to savor your success.
