Title: Living In The Day
Copyright Pegine Echevarria, MSW 2005
Date: January 2005 Volume 6 Issue 1
Everyday I work on improving and changing myself. I have a vision of my future and what I want to accomplish in my life. Through the years of studying self development, human productivity, the human being and all of our strengths and quirks I have come to realize that the challenge is everyday life. I’ve been challenging myself to be stronger, more powerful, more focused with stronger intentions and desires, so that I have the passion and persistence to do whatever is necessary today, so that I can achieve. Two things keep getting in my way. The first is other people, specifically the people I work with and my family. If only everyone would do what I want and act the way I had it planned in my head. The second is myself, my thoughts and actions. If only my own thoughts didn’t sabotage my actions. How I envy the individual who just gets dressed and goes out running, looking like they haven’t a care in the world, while I’ve chosen other endeavors. I see them, want to join them, but stay in my pajamas.
As a manager how I become frustrated when I am working on a project, delegating and giving directions and the people I’m directing do not understand my directions. I want to just do it myself, but then that would negate the point of having staff. It is so easy to point out the flaws of others. Once again other people had created havoc in my life. Now I have to figure out what I need to do, what I need to change, so that they can work effectively. Ultimately it always comes back to me.
If I didn’t run it was because I chose something else to do. If my staff is not performing well it is because I didn’t communicate the directions clearly and did not acknowledge how important they are to the success of the business.
If my business is not thriving, I need not look at the economy or the world at large but myself. What am I not doing? Am I not asking for the business? Am I not seeking the business? … and if not WHY NOT?
I can get caught in reading self development, leadership, goal setting and business books or surfing the internet, but ultimately only action brings results. Reaching out, communicating and serving others.
Like most of you, I evaluated and appreciated where I was in 2004 and have my intentions and goals for 2005. Of all the necessary steps, it is the daily, minute by minute choice of action that enables me to lie peacefully at night, giving thanks for the choices I made today.
In my lifetime I have made some bad choices and I have made some very good choices. What I seek to do now is make the choices that challenge me, push me and ultimately allow me to serve my clients at the highest and deepest levels possible. I am fortunate to know that I was put on this earth to serve people, so that they can be leaders in their work, family, community and life.
My greatest desire is that people have the courage to be the best they can be. To go past the fears, the hurts, and the worries, to not concern themselves of what others think of them, but to focus on how they can serve, how they would like to be and take the necessary actions to be that person.
I highly recommend that you forward this issue to your staff, co-workers, and business associates. You can be of service to those individuals interested in increasing productivity, increasing their ability to achieve, and increasing their ability to manage and be part of an effective team!

Pegine’s Thought of the Month:
“Staying the day is the only way we can meet life’s challenges. Not tomorrow, not yesterday only taking action today”
Pegine Echevarria, MSW
Quotes of the Month:
Look to this day,
For it is life,
The very life of life.
In its brief course lie all
The realities and verities of existence,
The bliss of growth,
The splendor of action,
The glory of power-
For yesterday is but a dream,
And tomorrow is only a vision,
But today, well lived,
Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day
Sanskrit proverb by Kâlidasâ,
Indian poet and playwright,
Fifth century A.D.

Try-its:
When you follow the steps below you will be more focused, achieve more and be able to meet the day’s challenges.
1. Start your day by being thankful. At times this may be a challenge. Do it anyway. Start with the basics, you have a roof over your head, clothes to wear, food to eat, continue from there.
2. Make a to-do sheet.
3. Then plan your day. Plot your day on a time sheet, in fifteen minute increments. You will know what you can achieve and what you can not. The things on your list that you can not achieve either delegate them to someone else or put them on tomorrow’s list. Stay mindful of the time it takes.
4. Note how you spend your money; spend your time, what you eat. Make conscious choices. You have the power of choice.
5. Plan, take action and analyze the results. Did things turn out how you planned? If not why not? What was your part in it? A coach of mine suggests that I ask myself “Is that how an internationally recognized and loved business guru would react?” I admit I have a love/hate relationship with that question, because it forces me to review where I am going and what I want for myself.
6. At the end of the evening, give thanks for all you accomplished and learned and let it go.

Kick-butt actions:
Directing your attention to the issues that hold you back is the first step to being the person you dream of becoming. There are many ways to address your personal issues; therapy, coaching, reading self help books, and education. However, there are other issues that you can gain freedom from by participating and attending meetings and groups with others who have dealt with similar issues. The twelve steps program is the one type of group that can help you. I have seen miraculous changes in people who are members of anonymous groups.
Twelve steps programs began with Alcoholics Anonymous. The program is a process that enables individuals to acknowledge the weaknesses within themselves and take actions so that the weaknesses can be minimized and eliminated, while your strengths and positive qualities are strengthened. I highly recommend that you find a group that addresses your weakness. Attend at least three meetings and be ready to grow. There are meetings in every part of the world, on line, on the phone that address everything imaginable. There are no dues or fees. Here are some different web addresses of international headquarters:
